One day’s worth of reading. Times that by seventeen. Now add four more 300-500 page art theory/history books on top of that (Photo stolen from my classmate Michelle Daly, who is doing great work at MCLA).
Talking to a friend back home, in a brief respite from powering through the enormous reading list for the ICPP program, she challenged me to pull together a list of my favourite pieces of text we were charged with surveying. Here it is.
- Gina Athene Ulysse, It All Started With A Black Woman: Reflective Notes on Writing/Performing Rage
- Katherine Profeta, Dramaturgy In Motion: At Work on Dance and Movement
- Fred Moten, The Undercommons; and In The Break
- Theodor Adorno & Max Horkheimer, The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception
- Eve Sedgwick, Queer & Now (from Tendencies)
- Frantz Fanon, Reciprocal Bases of National Culture and the Fight for Freedom
- Judith Butler, Gender is Burning (from Bodies That Matter)
- José Esteban Muñoz, Vitalism’s Afterburn: The Sense of Ana Mendieta; Disidentifications; and Cruising Utopia (this book has never been far from my hand for years now)
- bell hooks, Is Paris Burning?
- Claudia Rankine, Citizen
- Krzysztof Wodiczko, Projections (from Perspecta 26)
- Roland Barthes, Mythologies
- Jennifer Doyle, Thinking Feeling (from Hold It Against Me)
- Chris Kraus, Shit On My Sleepmask (from Video Green)
- Gilles Deleuze & Felix Guattari, How Do You Make Yourself A Body Without Organs (this text is kind of an asshole)
- Allan Kaprow, Assemblages, Environments & Happenings
Enjoy. Now, if anyone wants to read all these and talk about them….please don’t come to me; I’ve already moved on to a terrifying amount of new research.
(Jokes! I’d love to hear thoughts and feelings on any of the above.)
