What place do ideas of magic have in contemporary art now? What structures of ritual and, what charged processes of object and mark-making, what ideas of metaphysics and intuition, what positioning or engagement of the viewer?
Magic Happens will present a series of performative art events that engage with notions of wonder, transformation, affect, and magic. Critically reflecting the complexities of cultural construction and representation, we will engage with artists that interface with these ideas in a number of ways; those who draw on their own culture’s relationship to magic and ritual within their work; those for whom the contemporary art community is the culture they’re fashioning a ritual from/for; and those who reinvent or appropriate ideas of magic through emergent contemporary cultures.
Conceived with Amy-Clare McCarthy, Magic Happens is a collaborative curatorial project and will occur in 2016.
